#FireDrillFridays: I Don't Have Time To Do Social Media

I love social media, and I get why it's important. I just don't have the time to dedicate to doing it well. Can you give me some advice on how to fit everything into my schedule?

Hi Brenda, 

 

Usually when people tell me they like social media but don't have time for it, one of two things is happening: 

 

1. They truly don't know how to budget their time as it relates to social media activity. 

 

2. They don't know where to begin in terms of having the proper skill set to manage social media. 

 

For the sake of argument, let's pretend you know everything you need to know about social media, and literally the only thing that's stopping you is that you don't have enough hours in the day. 

 

My only tip to you, my friend, would be to look at how you're prioritizing your time. If social media is truly important to you, you must bake it into the hours in which you are naturally more productive. 

 

For example, I schedule 15 minutes every few days to load up my Buffer queue with pre-planned content, and I try to make sure I have at least one week planned out in advance. For that 15 minutes (I use the timer on my computer), I do nothing but read, plan, create and post. 

 

No emails. No notifications. No other distractions. 

 

Doing this every other day or every few days helps ensure I'm consistently posting, which can, in turn, result in better engagement rates across all of my channels. 

 

It also allows me to make the most of "aha!" moments during the week when I want to engage in real time or think of something clever.

 

My mind is free to be creative because I've made time to be productive.

 

See how that works? 

 

There are lots of tools that can help you in this quest, but here are just a few I recommend to help plan/post content: 

 

- Buffer

- Feedly

- Tweetdeck

- Hootsuite

- Google Alerts

 

And there are SO MANY MORE out there, depending on what your specific need is! 

 

Remember, there is nothing in the social media rulebook that says you have to max-out activity on every channel: that's just nuts. Instead, think about which platforms you naturally gravitate towards or prioritize channels based on who you're trying to reach.

 

You'll naturally be pulled to where you should be and where you should spend your time. And? In following this advice, you'll be better equipped to make the most of that time.
